Praça do Comércio or Commerce Square is the widest and the most impressive square in town! It is located by the Tagus river and for many centuries it was the visit card of the portuguese capital, as the main harbour was located nearby. We also call it Terreiro do Paço , because of the Royal Palace (Paço) built here after the discovery of the seaway to India in 1498. Standing here, our eyes reach the highest hill of Lisbon with the Saint George’s castle, Bairro Alto, the Arch of Rua Augusta, as well as the equestrian Statue of Joseph I.
