The Downtown or Baixa of Lisbon is the lowest part of the city, located between hills. This area was completely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755, which destroyed almost all the city. Unlike the mazy old city, the architects reorganized the downtown using a grid plan, with “pombaline" buildings and wide squares, like Restauradores and Rossio. Already in the 19th century, in order to improve the steep accesses from the downtown to the neighborhoods on the top of the hills, a wise solution was found – the elevators of Lisbon. Let's walk together through the downtown and be surprised by the incredible façades, statues and the stories behind them!
